Jackson Growth Alliance (JGA) has received a USDA Rural Business Development Grant (RBDG) to help expand Kite Hill Vineyards, a female‑owned winery and member of the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail. The grant supports new equipment that will increase production capacity and strengthen the local wine industry.
Owned by Barbara Bush since 2006, Kite Hill Vineyards produces handcrafted wines from grapes grown in the Shawnee Hills American Viticultural Area (A.V.A.). The winery’s current winemaker, who represented Southern Illinois University and the region’s wine industry in France, continues to build on Kite Hill’s tradition of quality and innovation.
With the new equipment, Kite Hill Vineyards has expanded production from 2,000–2,400 gallons to more than 8,000 gallons annually, allowing the business to meet new demand and produce wine for other Illinois vineyards. This growth will help increase revenue and support local agriculture.
“This project is a great example of how the Rural Business Development Grant program helps small rural businesses grow,” said Darrell Bryant, Executive Director of Jackson Growth Alliance. “We’re proud to help retain and expand a business that contributes to Jackson County’s economic vitality.”
Jackson Growth Alliance serves as the county’s economic development organization, leading projects, grants, and partnerships that promote business growth and community development throughout Jackson County.
