Silkworm: A Journey of Community Support and Success
Bob Chambers’ grandfather made a pivotal decision in the late 19th century, bringing his family to Southern Illinois to work in the coal mines. Little did he know that this move would set the stage for a remarkable legacy—one that would impact generations to come.
The Educational Trailblazer
In 1939, Bob Chambers’ father achieved a significant milestone: he became the first member of their family to graduate from high school. His determination and commitment to education laid the groundwork for future achievements. Seven children followed in his footsteps, all attending Southern Illinois University at Carbondale—an institution that would play a crucial role in shaping their lives.
From Basement to Business Empire
Fast forward to 1981, when Bob Chambers founded Silkworm. What began as a humble “class project” between two high school friends evolved into a multi-million dollar full-service promotional products company. Their journey started in a basement, where they printed t-shirts using a secondhand manual press. Today, Silkworm, Inc. operates out of a spacious 32,000 square foot facility in Murphysboro IL, equipped with cutting-edge presses, machinery, and a dedicated team of 70 members.
The Silkworm Difference
Silkworm’s expertise extends beyond t-shirts. They specialize in custom graphic design, promotional products, embroidered apparel, banners, signage, and awards. However, their real secret lies in something intangible: Awesome Customer Service (ACS). President Bob Chambers emphasizes exceeding customer expectations, going above and beyond to ensure satisfaction.
Community Support: A Vital Ingredient
Silkworm’s success story is intertwined with the unwavering support of the Murphysboro community. From day one, local government and banks rallied behind them, recognizing the potential impact of this homegrown business. A talented pool of workers contributed to building Silkworm’s team, fostering growth and innovation.
Southern Illinois University at Carbondale: A Valuable Resource
The resources and expertise of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale have been invaluable to Silkworm. Their collaboration with the university has enriched the community, creating a symbiotic relationship that benefits both parties. As Silkworm thrives, so does the region it calls home.
Gratitude and Roots
Bob Chambers reflects on his roots in Murphysboro and the beauty of Jackson County. He is grateful that his grandfather chose this area as their home—a decision that set in motion a legacy of hard work, community support, and entrepreneurial spirit.
Silkworm’s commitment extends beyond their physical space. Their apparel, promotional products, banners, and sponsorships are visible throughout Southern Illinois communities, reinforcing their dedication to the region.
Since 1981, Silkworm has been more than a business; it’s a testament to the power of community, education, and unwavering dedication.
