$5.6 million invested in new development in 2023
In Jackson County, a variety of financial incentives await businesses that choose to establish or expand their operations. One of these incentives, the Carbondale/Murphysboro/Jackson County Enterprise Zone, is managed by the City of Carbondale, the City of Murphysboro, and Jackson County government, and authorized by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
The Enterprise Zone incentives include abatement of property tax on new improvements, deduction in sales tax on building materials, waiver of building permit fees, and additional State of Illinois tax incentives.
In 2023, the following businesses leveraged Enterprise Zone incentives to invest an estimated $5.6 million in new development in the County:
Carbondale:
Mayer Properties, LLC, Booby’s, Harbor Freight Tools, Prairie Farms, Eastgate Shopping Center, JES Development Group, Carbondeli’s, Al Raawi Grocery, Charlie’s Fast Lube, Big Chill, SI Lawn and Landscape LLC, Hillcrest of Carbondale LLC
Murphysboro:
Thirteen RF Inc, Domino’s Pizza in Murphysboro, Murphysboro Main Street Depot Restoration, Vortex Properties, Southern Cremation and Burial Services, and River Rats
The Illinois Enterprise Zone Program aims to boost economic growth and revitalize areas within the state. It achieves this through a combination of state and local tax incentives, regulatory relief, and improved governmental services.
